FMGE & NExT: The Licensing Exam for MBBS Abroad Graduates

Every Indian student with a foreign MBBS must clear a licensing screening test to practise in India. Today that is the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) conducted by NBEMS; it is being replaced by the NExT (National Exit Test). NExT rollout dates have shifted repeatedly — verify the current status with NMC.

FMGE today, NExT next

The FMGE is a one-day, two-paper qualifying exam (you must score at least 50%); there is no limit on attempts. The NMC plans to replace it with the NExT, which is also intended to serve as the final MBBS exam and PG-entrance. Because the switch-over has been deferred several times, confirm which exam applies to your batch directly with NMC.

What improves your odds

Pass rates depend far more on your preparation than on the country. Choose a college with strong clinical exposure and English-medium teaching, start FMGE/NExT-aligned prep early, and keep your NEET and FMGL documentation in order. THE IMG PATH rates each college and country for FMGE/NExT suitability to help you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is FMGE still valid in 2026 or has NExT replaced it?

FMGE remains the operative screening test unless NMC has formally switched your batch to NExT. NExT timelines have been postponed multiple times — verify the current position with NMC.

What is the FMGE passing score?

You must score at least 50% (150 of 300 marks) across the two papers. There is no cap on the number of attempts.

Does the country I study in affect FMGE pass rates?

Indirectly — through teaching quality and clinical exposure — but your own preparation is the dominant factor. Compare colleges using our FMGE/NExT suitability ratings.
